About
I develop AI technologies at Meta where I contribute to Codec Avatars and previously Orion Augmented Reality Glasses. Before Meta, my career spanned Silicon Valley startups, Microsoft, and NASA where I contributed to the Microsoft HoloLens and the NASA Mars Helicopter. I like working at the intersection of math, code, and leadership.
Expertise:
- Engineering (systems design, implementation, optimization) in modern C++, CUDA, and Python including agent-driven approaches.
- Research and Development (scientific literature review, algorithm development, evaluation, technical communication).
- Technical Leadership (listening and influencing, organizational roadmap development and execution, talent development).
Experience:
- Staff / Principal Engineer, Machine Learning Systems (2020 - Present)
- San Francisco Bay Area, CA & New York, NY
- Led across multiple teams creating systems for training and inference of machine learning models underpinning products such as Codec Avatars, Orion Augmented Reality Glasses, and Instagram Ads Auto-Optimization. Contributed production code and technical direction in areas such as machine learning systems, algorithm performance optimization for CPUs and GPUs, and general software engineering.
- Regularly delivered organization-level impact as both an individual contributor and as technical lead of 10-20 person engineering efforts. Examples include…
- optimized the performance of a model training system by >90% which led to a >$10B reduction in amortized operating cost.
- landed an 800X acceleration of algorithm research infrastructure that unblocked a 200-person R&D organization from shipping.
- created an AI system for automated codebase verification that accelerated the compliance process of a 1000-person organization from 3-6 months to 1 week.
- created the software engineering, design, and testing standards used by multiple 100-person engineering organizations at Meta which included individually mentoring dozens of senior engineers.
- Engineer, AI Perception and Mixed Reality (2017 - 2019)
- San Francisco Bay Area, CA
- Developed scientific research into features for HoloLens 2. Contributed production code in modern C++, CUDA, and Python. Contributed machine learning and classical computer vision algorithm development and optimization for GPUs.
- Designed and implemented a machine learning system for high-precision human segmentation based on research in statistical learning and deep learning. Advanced the group’s state-of-the-art in the problem domain and published a granted patent, US10902608B2 Segmentation for Holographic Images.
- Engineer, Computer Vision (2016 - 2017)
- San Francisco Bay Area, CA
- Founded the company’s computer vision group as the 14th employee.
- Created and shipped the company’s core computer vision technology to >3000 customers which led to securing Series C venture capital funding.
- Research Intern, Autonomy Incubator (2015 - 2016)
- Hampton, VA & Remote
- Contributed computer vision research and software to an early prototype of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter.
College of Computing @ Georgia Institute of Technology
- Graduate Research Assistant (2014 - 2016)
- Atlanta, GA
- Carried out academic research in computer vision and contributed to GTSAM, a popular open source C++ library that implements sensor fusion for robotics and computer vision applications.
